As a health and safety professional I am always interested in any new advice or guidance from others within the health and safety industry. I have recently developed an information bulletin giving guidance on the benefits of useing a textile sling chain in place of the metal chain sling. Lifting operations are a common task carried out in my field (Oil and gas) and many of these operations are carried out in or around process equipment. Due to the nature of our operations much of this work is carried out in environments with the potential for explosive atmospheres due to the gases found in the process lines. This technical information bulleting gives information on the use of textile slings in order to replace the use of chains when conducting lifting operations reducing the risk of a spark potential when lifting with a metal chain.

Benefits and components of the textile sling

  • The textile wire enforced tubing protects the sling from damage and tear and resists the toughest conditions.
  • It has a unique tear prof and robust label which enables longer service life and the storage of inspection and servicing data.
  • Rib enforcement on the tubing made from high performance polyester doubles abrasion resistance and multiplies cut resistance allowing a much longer service life.
  • Raised woven in load capacity indication, remains clearly recognisable even under heavy soiling: prevents mix-ups and enhances work safety.
  • No spark potential when working in or around Oil and Gas process plant and machinery.

Any comments or constructive points would be much appritiated.

Out of curiosity can you post a link to the product. I have never heard of a 'textile sling chain'? Textile sling yes but I'd have though one containing a wire or chain would leave you with the inherant risk of the wire/chain cutting into the textile. Is the textile load bearing?

Below is a link to the British Standard for textile slings but I am not sure that this i relevant in your case.

Cant say I have ever heard of a textile chain sling but textile wire slings or spansets are commonly used in the music and events industry for rigging purposes.

Benefits are : They dont damage or mark trusses or building steels.  Realitively light weight, depending on the lifting capacity.  More suitable if a fire breaks out compared to a standard textile sling.  You can get a really good purchase or choke on whatever it is your lifting.

The textile is easily damaged though!!

Hello there

I saw what you are describing at the lifting show up in Aberdeen . Hence the oil industry interest

it was a total Metal free product the chain links were  like mini Polyester Round Slings

i have asked about the product to be told that they have only demo units in the UK.

i will look into the information i got on the day and email you
