A living wall, is a display of flowers/plants that are fitted (often at a height) in offices and businesses to add a feature to their reception area etc. Once erected, it waters itself although is regularly pruned and maintained by the company that hires out the wall. With that in mind, could I have advice on what control measures/regulations etc might apply/be useful to help ensure that the correct risk assessments are in place and the public are protected during and after erection? Selecting the correct access equipment under WAH regs has already been considered but I'd really appreciate any other thoughts. Thank you all Edited by user 30 December 2016 17:20:32(UTC)

As it waters itself (not sure what this involves) - legionella if there is stagnant water and/or spray?

I've seen these myself on various sites around london, A few year ago we did a large contract at the Canandian Embasy in London where they had these living walls up on the roof top terrace. Seeing them inside is something new, however as its being installed in an occupied area i would firstly start with getting the company to provide you with their Method statement and Risk assessment for the work that they are doing. You need to ensure that the area is barriered off ideally with Chapter 8 Barriers and an alternative access to the floor be made available if so required. In their Method statement the company would have to provide you with information on how they will enter the building, where the planters will be delivered, How they willbe getting them to the installation level. How they will be errecting the planters, the access to electrics and water supplies, if access to a dry riser is required then a permit to work may be required from the landloard or building owners. Risk assessments would cover hazards such as Delivery, movement of epuipment, protection of the public and employees, working at hight, electrical tools, working within dry risers, enclosed spaces etc.. The company that will be maintaining it should also provide you with a set of RAMS to show exactly how they will be carrying out this work once the living wall has been installed. Ideally the company should provide this information for you to check over, have you not asked them ?

Gerry. Thank you so much for your help. They have provided me with RAMS but they are currently insufficient. Your comments have been extremely useful and I will ensure they cover all these areas. Kind regards and if you think of anything else, please feel free to comment further.

Happy new year to all. Hi Wendy, please remember to concider the electrical installation near the wall. Condensation can be a problem and maintenance of any lighting needs to be thought about. Kind regards
