I'm just looking for a little advice on PUWER requirements for office equipment (specifically those items on desks; so computers, phones, printers)
I understand they fall under PUWER, where there is a requirement for regular inspection - But how does this apply to computers? - We have them PAT tested every 3 years, but what about interim inspections?
I would appreciate finding out what other companies do; do you have them serviced, or rely upon user inspections (if so, are they documented?)
Thanks
Anneliese

Most companies will do a scheduled electrical safety test at regular intervals deteremined by the risk assessment. I have seen companies do this anywhere from a 3 monthly basis to a 3 yearly basis for example. Most office equipment such as computers that are primarily stationary in an office environment would require less testing than say protable electical equipment used on a construction site exposed to weather, damage, wear and tear.
General good practice would also include, user pre-use checks (generally not recorded), formal office and I.T. inspections (visual) recorded on an inspection report, visual inspection by competent person on regular basis, put in place a system of reporting and dealing with damaged equipment. Again all determined by RA.

Our approach is as follows. We upgrade the IT platforms (individual PC's) every 5 years (max). The tender for the purchase includes any specific H&S requirements, e.g. height adjustable, tiltable, etc. We do not test them again as they are stationary. If a PC is moved the IT department visualy inspect the unit and cables etc to ensure they are re-installed correctly. If a user develops a probelm they raise an IT support ticket and action taken to address.
Printers etc are on a hire/lease arrangement and subject to regular servicing. None of our IT equipment falls under our PAT testing regieme.

As PUWER inspections relate to work equipment which is exposed to conditions causing deterioration liable to result in dangerous situations, it may be that office equipment doesnt need inspection (other than in respect of electrical safety).
