Good Afternoon ,

Could anyone provide some advice on how to carryout a risk assessment for the control of magnetic fields in the workplace . I believe that although the ELVs are considered low in the workplace this is still to be a documented process

I would appreciate any advice given for this subject

Regards Mike

Hi,

You need to identify the likely sources of EMF's initially. The HSE website lists some equipment that emmits EMF and that would be of interest in your case.

Such sources as welding equipment, motors, tools and microwaves are likely to be well below the public (low action levels) because of the manufacturing requirements to shield such exposure.

The high risk sources are electricity sub stations, high voltage powerlines, potentail poor wiring of 3 phase, tele masts etc.  These sources will potentially emmit very high levels of electric and magnetic field and really require an EMF specialist to assess and measure the fields.

Next you really need to consider persons that may possess a medical/implated device such as pace makers, hearing aids etc as high levels may interfere with these.  I have spent weeks going through all of the information on this subject and i would reccomend that you refer to the following:

The values are identified for public and employee exposure in the above information.

Values can be assessed though given information on equipment and measuring the fields with an EMF meter/tester.

An action plan and/or exposure assesment may be required depending upon the results of the measurements/information.

Hope this helps
