I have a question based on understanding. Is there a requirement based on guidance or best practice, for the fitting of a cross beam to the top level of racking uprights.

Rightly or wrongly, I was always of the opinion that the protruding upright at the top level was used by FLT drivers, etc. as guidance for locating pallets.

Any advice or guidance would be most appreciated

I will be honest. I have never heard of any requirement for such a measure to be taken, and in my experience I have not seen the fitting of such a cross beam as common practice. Maybe other posters might have better info.

I would be tempted to risk assess the fitting of a cross beam in such a manner. For instance, is there an increased risk of a rack becoming unstable in the event of a FLT mast coming into contact with said cross beam at force (seeing as it is located at the top of the rack and therefore at the most unstable point of the structure?)

Interesting one.

If I'm understanding you correctly, your basically asking if you can put a shelf at the very top of the racking upright? So the shelf would sit level with the top of the upright? The only experience I have is from working in a warehouse which didn't use forklifts so probably isn't much use, however all of the racking had a shelf or supports level with the top of the racking upright, this did mean that stock occasionally fell off the sides but this was usually due to muppet staff trying to squeeze too much up there. Don't imagine that was helpful in any way. Cheers Nick
