Inspection and Maintenance requirements? Please help

Hi,
I am currently reviewing some removable guard rails/barriers which is used to prevent access from height into a deep Pit. As a secondary concern this pit can be covered partially by a temporary work platform to undertake a certain activity occasionally (Note: this is removable and not for use in construction)
What Inspection/Maintenance would we require to ensure that it is fit for purpose? I am looking at various legislative requirements including Working at Height Regs, PUWER however cannot seem to find the ultimate answer of what is required other than open statements such as they should be constructed in accordance with design and edge protection should be rigid to prevent people falling but nothing on Inspection and maintenance. I am awaiting a copy of the BS 6180:2011 to review and hope this will help but in the meantime I wondered if anyone has had any experience with these?

From your post I suspect you are on the right track with W@H and PUWER. However, with the vast array of work equipment it would be nigh impossible to detail all the requirements. Ultimately PUWER requires an employer to ensure the equipment is fit for purpose. The frequency and degree of the inspection/maintenance regime is really down to the duty holder to determine based on the potential risks and the amount of use the equipment would be subjected to. I think it would be worth getting input from an engineer and/or temporary works supervisor to assist in your decision.

It's difficult to give a definitive answer without being able to see what it is you're describing. That said, i've worked with some complex designed scaffolds over the years (as well as various other forms of TW) and the majority of those have been inspected weekly by a competent person so that would be my initial recommendation, given the similarities of what you're describing.
