Having just started at a new company with various manufacturing operations . A customer has asked my boss if his son can do work experience within various different factory departments

I personally am not happy with this given that the company is struggling to enforce risk controls as it is (hence my appointment)

I was wondering what other peoples take on this is ?

Work experience is a great opportunity for young people to experience the world of work.

HSE has some good advice: http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg364.pdf

I am with WatsonD - too often we rush for why we shouldn't do something

But some matters for your boss to consider before allowing this person on site

Is there someone who can supervise them 100% of the time they are present at site (Not merely be in the presence of)?

Do the processes involve chemical substances or materials considered hazardous to health?

Are radiation sources present e.g. non-destuctive testing/measurement devices?

Is the process noisy?

Do processes involve lifting / carrying?

What hours would they be attending?

All would need consideration and control measures for young persons before they came to site
