Morning all,

The company I work for is soon going to be required to perform electrical testing on labelling machines that we manufacture, that are back on site for repair/servicing. I have looked at all of the guidance on the hse website and feel fairly confident that we have established what needs to be put in place to create an electrical testing area that is safe and controlled, but was wondering if anyone else has had experience of operating in or creating one of these areas. We are going to do the following but any other thoughts or suggestions would be welcome.

  • Have a kill switch on the testing room exterior to shut off the supply if required
  • Use insulated tooling with 1000v rating
  • Have perspex covers on the inside of the electrical cabinet doors, so that when the cabinets are open, the engineer is unable to make physical contact with any electrical componenet but is still able to view the equipment and check for flashing lights etc
  • Place 'no entry' and other applicable warning signs on the testing room entrance and have a red beacon which will be illuminated when testing is in progress
  • provide insulated matting (class 4) for the enginners to stand on whilst performing the repair/testing

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Not sure about the perspex

How does the engineer check circuits with their metering equipment if they cannot access the inside of the live cabinet not all components will have LED to indicate their function?

Being a label machine I am presuming some kind of programming functionality - is the interface within or outside of the cabinet?
