Handling aerosols? The dos and donts

The current processes are minimal MHE, obviosuly reach trucks must put away in the racking due to height under strict controls in a caged area,  Pump trucks must move pallets from goods in, but what about pallet inverting?

If a client wants 15 pallets of aerosols which are supplied on white pallets but can they can only accept them on blue pallets, what are regs are around using a fork truck and a pallet inverter which obviously tips a whole pallet of mini missiles upside down and puts all the pressure onto the lid?

Hi NicoleJ15.  This is a tricky one.  If its a case of having to use an inverter to simply change to a client approved pallet would the simple thing to do not have the right pallet used in the first instance/  I would image at even attempting to put aerosols into an inverter they ar going to be subjected to a certain amount of pressure from the inverter?  Ive never used an inverter myself but know the basic principle.  For me the law would state get it right first time with the right pallet at source so this task is avoided!!

Hi Brian

We are a storage distribution centre so we recieve other clients stock to store and send out to their customers. We have no say on what type of pallet it comes in on :( We cater for hundreds of clients from all over the world so they could come in on all sorts of pallets. I hate the thought of inverting them but handballing would be so time consuming!!

What instruction have you received regarding storage and handling of this particular load?

Highly likley that along with a Limited Quantity label there will also be this way up arrows - dependent upon the material, propellant and discharge system inversion may render the aerosol unusable by the ultimate customer.

If the recipient requires a different pallet to the supplier provided that becomes a chargeable item as would the labour to handball

Having worked in the aerosol industry before I would definitely not recommend inverting the pallet as this could lead to accidental discharge of the aerosols which in turn could lead to a potential flammable atmosphere being created.  Your only real option is to handball them.
