Good morning all,

I would be very gratfeful for some opinions on the following;

I am of the opinion that based on the BS 9999 2017 which says;

"To ensure that operation of the evacuation lift is maintained for as long as required for the evacuation of disabled people, an alternative power supply should be provided"

and taking into account power failures, that if no alternative power supply is available then we should not use or advertise the lifts to be used in evacuations or included in PEEPs. I feel that an evacuation chair solution, supplying an adequate number with sufficient numbers of staff trained in their use is perferable.

Your thoughts or opinions would be appreciated.

Regards

Hi Russ

Evacuation lifts have to have a completely clean power supply and be enclosed in their own lift shaft, if your exsisting lift wasnt fitted with this specification even with a secondary system fitted it could not be used to evacuate staff.

thanks 1 user thanked score for this useful post.

Hi Score,

Thanks for the info.

Another question if you dont mind, presuming lifts meet the criteria that you mentioned, a secondary power source would still be required I assume?

Hi Russ

In my experience as an ex lift enginner the fire evacuation lift would have a single enclosed fire proof shaft and have a clean power supply, any other lifts in the building would run off a shared supply and be grouped in a larger lift shaft.

In answer to your question i have never seen a secondary system used on a fire evacuation lift as the supply is protected and not part of the buildings main power supply.
