Hi, does any one have knowledge on the requirements to store Formalin? We are looking to refurbish a storage facility but cannot seem to settle on an answer in terms of ventilation, enclosure etc and if its even warranted i.e seperation, segregation suffices in an area of the store that has sufficient ventilation! Its used for Agricultural purpose as a disinfectant and we are storing it only.

Formalin is nasty stuff- a known carcinogen. How much are you holding and in what size container?

I know you are storing it but then what? I am assuming that at some point you will be moving it out of storage. How will you do that? What is the risk of spillage during the process? How much could you spill? Then what would you do?

You need bunding and ventilation. You will need PPE to deal with anything like a large spill (more than 500 ml let’s say?). Definitely an established, workable spill procedure is required.

A Kurdziel has raised the issues around this. There are formaldehyde neutralising granules available to deal with small spillages. There is also some guidance on the control of use of formalin/formaldehyde at:

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/changes-to-formaldehyde-formalin-rules (sorry, not sure how to create hyperlink!)

Many thanks for the replies. We are all up to date in terms of the use & spills etc. The current store is enclosed with an extraction unit and potentially you would ask 'why would you not do this again in the refurb'?. Its to do with space and whether or not it has to be actually seperated and segragated to that degree i.e. as long as the store itself is well ventilated, bunded etc could we store it without rebuilding a seperate storeroom.
