Hi All,

If you have a detached retail unit that is an existing structure, is it acceptable for it to only have a single access and egress point for the roof?  We are not permitted to simply add another one, but my concern is contractors and employees working on the roof in the event of a fire.

My ideas are as follows, but would appreciate others views or experience of similar:

1. Place a fire alarm and visual beacons of the roof.

2. Keep a rope ladder on the roof that can be used to escape in the event that the only exit is blocked by the fire. Make the ladders presence known as part and parcel of PTW to go on the roof and include some basic instructions with the ladder itself.

All feedback appreciated.

Thanks

I wouldn't put a rope ladder up there.  They are difficult to use at the best of times unless you are used to them.  Creating another means of descent, even if it is something basic like a scaffold may be more acceptable and easier to use.  The alarm system you suggested is entirely reasonable and there are plenty of portable systems available.
