So we have a mulitidrop driver who drives a transit type van delivering parcels and boxes to high street reatilers who uses a very light weight sack trucks lifts this bit of equipment into the back of the van and he opened the doors then grabbed the trolley with both hands just below each handle. He lifted up the trolley and began to place it down in the back of his vehicle (in an upright position). Just before the trolley made contact with the floor of the vehicle, he felt a sharp pain in his left shoulder. IP admitted that he has had problems in the past with his joints (ankles, shoulders etc) and he thinks this may be a similar occurrence again, although he has not had any problems with the shoulder in this incident previously. Riddor or not?

Accidents can lead to injury.
Ergo injury is not the same as accident. What was the accident?
Definitions available for accident on the HSE website RIDDOR pages. Twinges, pains etc. without an 'accident' are not reportable. Doesn't mean it shouldn't be investigated though in relation to how he is undertaking manual handling activities as likely the build up over the years of poor practice etc.
