We are looking to procure some bean bags for our university and the supplier has confirmed that those that they supply have been tested in accordance with the BS5852 part 1:1979, Cigarette test and the BS5852 part 1:1979, match test (i have seen the certification for this)

Does anyone know if the BS5852 is the correct testing standard or if another should be used instead?

BS online shows

BS 5852-1:1979 Fire tests for furniture. Methods of test for the ignitability by smokers' materials of upholstered composites for seating

BS 5852-2:1982 Fire tests for furniture. Methods of test for the ignitability of upholstered composites for seating by flaming sources

BS 5852:2006 Methods of test for assessment of the ignitability of upholstered seating by smouldering and flaming ignition source

CEN shows

EN 1021-1:2014 Furniture - Assessment of the ignitability of upholstered furniture - Part 1: Ignition source smouldering cigarette

EN 1021-2:2014 Furniture - Assessment of the ignitability of upholstered furniture - Part 2: Ignition source match flame equivalent

These are published by BSI as BS EN 1021-*:2014 in replacement of their 1994 and 2006 predecessors

Many thanks for this.  So would you say that, bearing in mind its a smoke free environment, that the furtniture would be better complying with the BS5852 1982  and 2006 examples that you provided?

Smoke Free environments have no bearing as specific legislation exists

The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 with ammendments in 1989, 1993 and 2010 do not seem to specify test methods

Firesafe had this to say back in 2011

Even Trading Standards who enforce this legislation appear vague on which test to use

https://www.businesscompanion.info/en/quick-guides/product-safety/new-upholstered-furniture

The latter link is quite informative as to what a supplier should be doing regarding their product offering
