Hello

One of our storage yards is in a rural location in which it is managed by 1X operative.

I am currently reviewing the Risk Assessment / Procedures etc & are considering introducing Lone Working Alarms or another suitable device.

Does anyone have recommendations on types of devices would be suitable for this scenerio.

Thanks

First you have to decide what is  the threat to the lone worker. Is it them being attacked by an intruder or is them being pinned underneath an object falling from a shelf or whatever?

Then you can decide if you want a panic type alarm which they have to activate or an alarm that activates itself if they don’t cancel it or one incorporating a motion detector. You have to be realistic. A lot of people issue these types of device but after a few a false alarms end up disabling them and putting them away in a cupboard. Is that likely to happen?

You also have to decide who monitors the alarm? HQ? which might be miles away? Does the guy work weekends etc when there is no one in the office? Do you want to splash out on a 24/7 monitoring company who will respond to an alarm being raised and initially try to contact the person then call the emergency services? The best ones are very good but is the cost worth it? You could just get them to call-in every so often.

Is the location intrinsically dangerous? High storage with dodgy access? If that is the case would it not make more sense to sort that out rather than investing in kit that you might not use?

We issued drivers with a mobile, Mobile phone and ring every so often to check in? - see if you have coverage off normal network and then see if you want the phone limiting to specific numbers or not if you are worried about bills etc. Is that an answer for you? (Or dect phone & repeaters but on large site repeaters can have dead spots. With some now you can also use a WiFi signal If you have a bad signal and use repeaters to ensure coverage, or I understand you can get a piconode off some mobile providers to improve signal. Direct integration with existing systems and can use for operational needs rather than being a standalone solution.

All well and good until finance forget to pay the bill and the mobile is summarily cancelled, the operative forgets to charge it, pick it up from the desk, network is congested

Tcehnology is wonderful when it works as intended and wanted - trouble is the technology companies haven't heard of Sod and his law or his mate Murphy both whom seem to turn up when least wanted

Oh and make sure even your boss knows the law unlike the Chief at Cleveland

i use a device provided by Soloprotect - its like a badge and the user wears it - if there is a period of inactivity, then the call centre will call the established number to alert the fact that the device is inactive and this provides an alert for someone to go outside or whereever to ensure he/she is ok

It is worth searching the forum page as this has been discussed many times before. There are many different systems out there so you need to be very clear on what you want from the device and how it is going to be managed and implemented. I have used Guardian 24 before which was not popular and Alertcom, which could do man down as many can. Depending on your budget and requirements your choice will be limited and in general, unless paying a fortune, they are pretty similar with 2 main styles either badges or fobs. The reporting and tracking tools will vary and could influence your decsion depending on your needs.

Hope this helps

PM me if you want, happy to have a telephone conversation if it helps
