Hi All,

I am currently trying to improve our emergency evacuation maps but I am finding this extremely difficult in Word! Has anyone encountered a decent appliction for this type of task which doesn't consume large amounts of time and is relatively cheap? I have tried googling but there doesnt seem too much on offer and the applications all look rather complex.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

James

I use Microsoft Office Visio for basic building layouts, once done I copy and paste into word. You have to fiddle a bit to get wall thicknesses down so not so chunky looking.

Worth a look, It may do what you want, you can add doors and windows etc and also text.

I too can really recommend Visio - it is easy to use and has lots of features other than just floor plans.  You can produce really good flow charts, event tree analysis charts (useful in accident investigation) and a whole host of other charts and plans really quickly and easily.  It was the first thing I asked for when I took my new job.

Hi

I use Edraw Max, really easy software to use and has elevated our site plans from my previous childish scrawls.  It looks very similar to visio at a glance.

Pros:  good library of clipart, icons, PID templates, etc

Cons:  Can crash occasionally (not lost any data when it has done this), also tried using this software for a newsletter, results were great but file was 80meg pdf due to imported photos so it wouldn't email.

It cost £239 for a lifetime support licence for 2x users

As my organisation wont pay for anything and I mean ANYTHING, I use MS Paint. Some colleagues have recomended using the drawing function within word, but I prefer Paint.

If you wnat to do 'proper' drawings, I note that Draftsight is a genuine fully-capable 2D CAD package given away for free by Dassault (they want it to tempt you into buying one of their 3D modelling packages).  The only real downside to it is that it periodically asks you to re-register, though I don't know why because they've never spammed me (of if they have, my spam filters find it easy to identify).  There's probably a slightly taller learning curve if you've never used a CAD package, but it's not insurmountable (and if you have used a CAD package, it's fundamentally much the same as any other 2D one).
