Hi. Can you please explain what ventilation is adequate? More accurately we have forklift truck charging area in warehouse - inside
We charge it after shift and charger switches off when battery is fully charged. Law says to provide adequate ventilation. What is adequate?? Our warehouse is about 8m tall however dont have any extraction or fans in charging area and obviously natural ventilation not in place as we charge after working hours. Could you please share your point of view.thank you Edited by user 29 July 2017 20:50:52(UTC)

Adequate ventilation is usually considered to be when you have 12 air changes per hour in the room, when undertaking hazardous area classification (See IP 15 Hazardous Area Classification code). However when you have a large building such as a warehouse that you decribe this is impractical. You need to check you have sufficient vetilation just around your forklift charging area. This may well be achieved by air movement caused by moving vehicles/forklifts, nearby open doors etc. Also as hydrogen from battery charging isn't generated in massive amounts, its takes a long time to generate an explosive atmosphere. If I recall the LEL for hydrogen is 4%. Which in a warehouse is likely to be a large volume, in practive never coming close to achieving that level. Also hydrogen is a very light gas, quickly/easily rises as its so buoyant compared to atmospheric air, so disperses quickly. You probably haven't got much to worry about.
