Any suggestions on what additional career value specific courses a CMIOSH in public service should look at? By this I mean I have A Diploma level 6, active CPD, 18001 auditor and want to look at additional topics. Realise there is the Masters route but thinking more about quails such as IEMA or FPA to advance my career. Thoughts and opinions welcome.

Hi Nick

It's really difficult to give advice without knowing what type of work you do and what your resposibilities are, or what you want to do!

I can give some idea of what other courses I have obtained post Diploma (I am in property/facilities management and construction) - (old) CDM-C training; Asbestos management P405; Legionella Management; Associate Certificate in Environmental Management; Fire Manager Certificate.

The most useful for me were the P405 and the Fire Manager Certificate.

Hope this helps...

There are other strings to your bow that may be of benefit - particularly if you're in public service or interact with the public in your duties. There are courses and training available in Customer Services, Administration etc.

I'm not suggesting that there's anything impolite about your people skills, or that your admin could be improved, just that CPD and personal development isn't always about H&S.

Hi both. I work in local government and cover a very diverse offering. I specialise in education and premises and have a property background. I am looking at furthering my career as well as development so your replies are welcome. Fire management sounds good. I am also looking at project management or environmental quals. I think it would be helpful if Iosh had a careers "advisor" as there are so many things to look at or consider.

Hi Uncle Fester. I agree that CPD should also be outside of Our discipline such as management experience and project management etc. So on this basis, any useful other quals or courses to recommend?

Hi Nick,

Both the ILM and the CMI offer management and supervisory courses at different levels depending on your background and wallet. You could also look at Vision2Learn's website to see the free level 2 courses that may be of relevance.

Hi Nick,

I agree with 'Uncle Fester'  (great name by the way!) that more rounded non-OSH skills would be useful. If your employer would fund something like an MBA, that would be a great addition.

You could also consider 'zooming in' on certain specialist skills such as asbestos, legionella, fire, CDM/PD, stress, wellbeing, training, or aligned subjects such as environmental, food hygiene, quality etc. Generalist or Specialist - always a dilema!

I would also encourage you to engage with IOSH - either with your local branch or network, or consider other roles such as Peer Review panel, Council candidate for next year etc.

All the best, Jonathan
