Hi all, we recently had a visit from the HSE who have served two improvement notices on my employer. I would like any information about GRP (Fibreglass) trimming and the type of booth where this should take place. By this I mean is there a company out there (there should be) who specialise in this area. I should imagine that it would be similar to a paint spraying booth whereby it requires explosion venting, high and low level ventilation plus sufficient LEV provision and possibly bag filtering for the solids. If anyone could put me in the right direction, I would be most greatful. Our current set up is woefully inadequate so the improvement notice is well justified.

I would think that any reputable company that supplies paint spray booths would be able to design and install a suitable booth for you. Have you also looked at cutting / sanding tools with built in extraction?

Thanks, I was already looking at the on - tool extraction but ours is a fairly big operation so requires more substantial controls. Plus, the amount of dust generated is by no means small.

I had a situation where dust was being created by the grinding and drilling operations being carried out on largish fibreglass mouldings. Ordinary LEV would not have resolved the issue due to the charatieristic of normal LEV systems and the highly variable size, shape and complexity of the items, some of which meant the worker actually having his head inside the moulding. The solution was to fit on-tool extraction to collect the dust at source, rather than the alternative of permitting it to enter the general working environment and then attempt to remove it. If you would like more on this, e.g. where to got to find this equipment, etc., PM me with your contact details and I will be happy to respond. Chris
