Asbestos - total removal in the Netherlands by 2024

Hi,

I work for a company with a head office in the Netherlands and the group safety director has asked if we are planning to remove the asbestos cement cladding from one of our buildings.  The reason for her enquiry is that the Dutch government have apprently ruled that all asbestos must be removed from buildings in the Netherlands by the year 2024, and she was curious to know if there was any such plans in the UK.

I can't find anything in the UK relating to such a plan and, assuming the requirements of the Control of Asbestos Regulations are adhered to, the total removal of all asbestos in the UK could potentially cause more issues than it solves.

However, I'm wondering if anyone has heard of an potential plans for the UK.

It's been discussed here before and the conclusion was that it would be a very dumb idea to require removal of all asbestos.  For example, the building I'm sitting in now has asbestos fibres in the damp-proof-course membrane, so removing that means taking down the walls of a five-storey building, or propping the walls to the whole perimeter and cutting out a few courses.  That exercise will benefit no-one.

From what I recall, there is no sign of any legislation requiring removal from buildings in the UK.

However, a quick google suggest the Dutch law is not to remove all asbestos either, but rather to remove asbestos roofs where the asbestos surface is exposed to the air - a rather smaller (though still quite major) endeavour.
