Hi Learned Friends and Specialists

We have started internally as opposed to externally on Lift construction works and in these works there is a certian amout of slinging and lifting for each project (Maybe 1 full day in a 3 week build up) and as such I believe there is a requirement for both the men and managers to go on a course but obviously only certain elements are required.

I wanted to also ask of there was any specific accreditation that is required or governing body etc attached to the training requirements and what they are to make sure the course has it.

I have also noticed that there are a lot of online courses these days so does anyone think these are adequate and up to what level.

Any help or advice greatly appreciated

Alan

Suggest looking at CITB - they can assist in all areas relating to rigging/slinging and the supervision and management of lifting.  Or appoint competent contractors?

Either way, you have a duty to manage the elements of the project (is it CDM)?

Hi Waz,

Thanks for info and Yes it is under CDM but USUALLY part of a bigger contract ie We would only ever be a "Contractor" as per CDM and never the Principal Contractor. Are you saying that makes a difference to the requirement ?

The PC would expect and probably ask for supporting evidence, that you are competent to conduct the operations or which you have been appointed.  Therefore, how will you be able to demonstrate compliance with the term competent without formal training - you could sub-contract that element out - but would potentially be a far greater cost.

CSCS used to do courses, but they have fallen through the wayside in the shake up of competence based training, due to fraud.  Contact CITB in the first instance, see what courses they offer (maybe some 1 day course you can get yourselves on)?

Spud,

ALLMI provide a good Slinging and Signallers course. Although based on the Lorry loader industry the course follows the guidiance of BS7121 and LOLER. It is also affiliated with CSCS an can carry the CSCS logo for construction work. Dependant on the guys experience it is either a 1 or 2 day course. Highly worthwhile and highly regarded in the industry. It's a different route to the CITB training and may be more suitable to your needs. I wouldnt recommend online as the practical element is critical in this type of work.

Nick
