Having reviewed ACoPs for LOLER and PUWER and the element particularly about not letting unauthorised personnel access to trucks, what are thoughts on standardising 'key' access e.g. same key issued to authorised drivers of Reach, where there are identical trucks in operation.

The SSoW in operation currently (only been here a few weeks) is that each type of truck Pedestrian/Reach/Counterbalance has the same key, with trained operatives given a key according to the training they have received (reach/counterbalance etc.).  Not sure if this is standard in the industry?  I would be happier with keypads/access control that allows the issue of specific access numbers against the operatives name to a specific truck type.

Thoughts appreciated.

Hi,

One way around this is a key pad with a pin number, some trucks come with this facility built in

Before keypads we used to issue individual vehicle key(s) to authorised operatives - this would be stamped with their clock (employee) number so that if found (including left in the ignition of an unattended vehicle) we knew who to talk to

Whilst PIN key pads eliminate lost keys or damaged ignitions they are potentially open to abuse unless thoroughly monitored

Can't remember if it ever reached market but some time ago I was approached by a supplier who was offering a uniquely coded fob system - think PIN number without having a PIN
