Hi all,  I have been looking at PUWER and LOLER and trying to work out how detailed and formal the training might need to be for anyone we want to appoint to be able to use a scaffold hoist.  I am talking about the electric push button type to lift and lower materials only in a cage or bucket - say up to 175kg (cage).  These things are push button operated and have built n features to ensure they do not operate if overloading occurs.  PUWER refers to "adequate training" for work equuiment and LOLER to a "competent person" for planning the lifting operation and "appropriate training and instructions" for the purpose of pre use checks.  We will pay the hirer to carry out the thorough inspections.  Do we need to arrange for external formal training to get certificates for those that we want to be able to operate the hoists or would an in house prepared training, closely following the instructions and guidance for use from the hirer & manufacturer, as well as other things, be sufficient?  I wondered if anyone else had considered this?  Any help appreciated.

You have probably got your answer by now but I was searching for another topic and found this thread.

On our sites we quite often use goods hoists on our scaffolds for transport of materials in and debris out (never people though)

We pay the hoist installatiopn company a fee per person to be trained in the use of the hoist (usually around £25 pp) and keep a register of those who have been trained in the use of the hoist.

Only personell who have had this training are allowed to use the hoist (we try to restirct this to max 4 people on a site to allow good management of the hoist use)

The training covers how to check the hoist, safety devices, load the hoist safely and use safely etc
