I am not in H&S myself, except for my own interest. I thought in construction a CSCS card is a requirement. In my local Job Centre Isaw an advert for labourers for a renovation job which read "labourers required cscs card advisable, but not essential" .
Is that normal ?

I believe the major contractors have commited to using CSCS. Recently ECS (run by the same people) have taken over electricians cards and related disciplines. We work on construction sites and you cannot get on any of them without an ECS or CSCS card. The labourer card is a minimum really. ECS require qualifications. It's confusing to know what to do as we install data comms and our installers don't need a qualification to do that, however now we are facing not being able to get on site because there is no relevant card. The ECS is a shambles.

A CSCS card is not a legal requirement but recognised by most companies in the construction trades. Many small companies do not sign up for it especially those working on domestic properties.
