Hi there

I was wondering if someone could help please,  ive been asked if you can have a toilet directly leading to a rest area where food can be consumed?  Im on the understanding that a corridor is required to seperate to the two but i cant find any documents to back this is black and white.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?

Many thanks in advance.

Andrea :-)

Hello,

I cannot find any regulation saying you can't do this but do not think the employees will be happy if a toilet leads on to where they eat. Can imagine there will be some complaints.

Food Hygiene rather than H&S seem to recall two doors and a gap in relation to commercial food preparation establishments

Loads of smaller food establishments have toilets that open directly onto eating areas. As long as the toilet facilities are looked after and people wash their hands after using the facilities there should not be a problem.

Off the top of my head I think this is allowed - I believe it's outlined in Approved Document L. Something to do with needing a door.....

Building Regulations approved document G paragrpah 4.10 has two reference drawings - one a single door, the other a two door system where the wash basin is seaparted from the toilet. This has a note excluding dwellings from having a separation lobby where the sanitary convenience door leads in to a food preparation area.

It also directs you to the Food Standards Agency guidance for business which on page 6 states "Toilets must not open directly in to rooms where you handle food"

"Food handling" means food prep rather than eating areas. If this referred to places where you eat food then several large coffee emporia would be in deep trouble.
