Hi I'm wondering if anyone works with or knows anything about the controls an organisation should have in place regarding the use of an engraving machine which uses a class 4 laser. It's fully enclosed and has an interlocked guard. Should they have an external laser protection advisor and do they require a specialist risk assessment ?

What does the equipment manual say, if anything?

Normally, if the guard is fully interlocked, no further controls are needed. Only issue is whether any adjustments are ever needed with the guard not in place, i.e. interlock defeated. If so, you need a suitably competent person, typically from the manufacturer or the service agent, as it should be a rare task.
