Hi All,

Appreciate your views on the need to fix the access ladders from inside of the scaffold viz-a-viz outside. Is there any significant hazard of having it fixed outside the scaffold properly secured/footed?

For tower scaffold, it's obvious to have it fitted inside as it is not stable as a 'tied' scaffolding is.

Appreciate any valuable input related to this.

Regards,

PN

It is good practice to ensure ladders are fixed inside the scaffold. Iam not aware of any exclusion to say they cannot be tied outside of the scaffold, but it does bring in an extra risk and therefore should be avoided if possible.

It's based on guidance within either TG20 or SG4 for independent tied scaffolds. There's a hierarchy of safe safe access, internal is preferred to external but it does present problems of it's own. The guidance is not hard and fast like Regulations ...wait...that may be an oxy-moron but I'm sure you enderstand. Have a look at NASC available guidance but I'm sure if you couldn't have external stair tower it went something like (next best)

External alternating single lift ladders and hatches (LADDER TOWER)

external multi-level ladders and hatches

internal single lift ......

internal multi lift ......

external single if only one lift

(last resort) external multi-lift ladder (regardless of securing methods or back scratchers and side rails)

as always, confirm for yourself, but hope it helps.
