We have a member of staff who has an eye injury (non-work related) and now has a medical eye patch whilst waiting for an operation. His doctors note runs out this week and he wants to return to work for financial reasons even though he admits he could get signed off for longer. He operates a telehandler and a small grab. What would you recommend we do as I am inclined to request the view of his GP in relation to returning before we make any decision on whether he comes back and if he does what he is capable/safe to do.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You need to bear in mind that having vision in only one eye will affect his depth perception and so will affect his ability to operate plant of this nature.  Has he been passed capable of driving a normal vehicle?  Usually the advice is not to drive initially, you can check that out on the DVLA website.  Also consider the work that he would be doing.  What is the risk to his good eye?  He might need to wear high grade eye protection at all times to protect his good eye.  Is there other work he could do that didn't involve use of the plant or any risk of eye injury?  Remember that his condition will mean he won't be able to do anything involving good hand / eye co-ordination so you will have to think carefully.  Just because a Fit Note runs out it doesn't mean that the person is capable of doing their normal job.

As someone said just because his fit note has run out does not mean that he is safe to work ie that he does not pose a threat to the safety of others . As depth perception is key to this guy’s role, I’d put the onus on him to prove that he was fit for work. He should obtain a letter from an optician (not a GP) confirming that he has the ability to do his job safely.

As mentioned, depth perception will be altered but so will perhipheral vision so if the workplace is particularly busy or has tight spaces to negotiate it could be a problem.

If you are of a mind to allow him to return to work as an operator knowing he has a problem with his vision it may be an idea to have someone qualified and independent to assess his ability first.
