A member of staff has formally requested a Do Not Resuscitate Order to be put onto their file.

I cannot find any information with regards to the legalities of this within a workplace; only guidance for medical professionals within a Healthcare environment.

My initial feelings are:

Firstly, is there a valid medical reason for a DNRO?

Secondly, is the person of sound mind to request a DNRO and would we have to have this professionally evaluated; GP referral, Occy Health referral etc.?

Thirdly, if there was a valid reason and/or the person was of sound mind to make the informed decision. I assume we would have to have the knowing consent of the employee's family with witnessed signatures? If we did not administer First Aid and the employee subsequently died, would we potentially face a lawsuit from bereaved family members who may contest a DNRO by the employee?

Thanks for any help on this matter.
