Hi, We are currently renting a 8 Ton FLT from a supplier. If we need to adjust the forks horizontally, we need to manually move them which takes 2 guys to do, its not an easy task and the manual handling risk is not acceptable. We have been quoted to have the forks automated so the forks can be adjusted by the FLT operator. The cost of getting these automated is £11,000. We need to either get them automated or look elsewhere to hire a FLT.

My Questions is...is there a responsibility of the supplier to get the FLT forks automated?

When renting the vehicle you set the specification to be supplied - an 8MT unit sounds like a very specific piece of kit and not the typical 3.5MT where adjustable forks would be more common

Why have you had a quote to modify someone elses equipment - or is this what your current renter has provided to adjust their vehicle to your needs?

Rather than two employees manually humping the forks if it is a relativley infrequent task (once a day or less) do you have a pallet truck & a flat area that could be used?

Not wanting to teach people to suck eggs but when the operator is attempting to adjust the forks do they raise them sufficiently off the ground and tilt the mast forwards so the forks swing out slightly from the mast and is the bar the forks hang from well greased and not bent/damaged?

If they are trying to adjust them without doing so then it's no wonder they would struggle and in my experience, when done properly they really aren't that difficult to move. In the bad old days I used to operate a loader in a sawmill with 8' long forks for carrying logs and I could easily manage those on my own.
