Hi,

Watching the Formula one, there was a ferrari mechanic injured as part of pit stop, apparently with broken leg. obviously thoughts are with those affected, especially the mechanic, their family, and the team.

question being - would it be a riddor? formula one is a british sport, team are based in uk and in italy, where and how would the ferrari team report their injuries and manage health and safety as there are so many jurisdictions, depending on race site, team bases, employer base, and employee side of thinks.

further, in terms of investigation, where would the decisions be in terms of the release of the car, which apparently seems to be partially-automated?

takes the decision further into a real-life application when presented with autonomous cars and liability...

First of all I agree hope the mechanic makes a quick recovery. Had this accident happened at Silverstone it would have been a RIDDOR incident and potential the HSE would investigate. F1 are professional teams so clearly a work activity (HSE covers F1 – LA all other motor sport) As this incident happened in Bahrain then UK Law does not apply – does not matter where the team is based. The H&S laws of Bahrain will determine if an accident report/investigation by an enforcement agency is required.

In view of the fine imposed on Ferrari the previous day for another dangerous pit stop incident perhaps the FIA need to suspend Ferrari for a couple of races until they can demonstrate they can safely operate in the pits.
