Anyone have experience of managing risk arising from industrial shredder operations?
Assuming that there are likely to be pressurised items in a waste stream which could be punctured by the shredder teeth and then fly out of the shredder, is there any specific exclusion zone around the shredder? Or a type of safety netting to retard any ejected / propelled items before they cause harm?
I have not been able to find literature on this issue....

Depends on the medium being shredded. I work at a tyre recycling plant. We have big raspers and shredders that eat car tyres for lunch, lorry tyres we cut into 3 sections and the it eats them easily.
Each shredder is feb by a conveyor that raises the tyres upto a height of 3-4m. It then drops into a hopper and then slides into the bowels of the machine. It then comes out of the machine and goes up a nother conveyor and through a trommel. Smaller bits fall through and get bagged, larger bits get fed back through the shredder and the circle continues.
There is no way a piece of tyre can be ejected from the machine and hit any employee. We have work stations at the machinery and there are interlocks that have to be operated to keep the feed conveyor operating.
Other p[lants may be different, depending on the medium being shredded
