We've recently had a set of steps fabricated that are used to travel over two production lines. Having looked at them I have concerns that the angle of the steps is too steep, the tread depth is too shallow and the with of the steps insufficient. If I'm being honest, they look like they've been designed to fit the available space at the expense of safety and usability.

Can anyone tell me which standard references the design criteria for such equipment?

EEMUA 105 Industrial stairs and ladders is a typical design standard.

I'd go with:

BS EN ISO 14122-1:2016 Safety of machinery - Permanent means of access to machinery - Part 1: Choice of fixed means and general requirements of access

BS EN ISO 14122-2:2016 Safety of machinery - Permanent means of access to machinery - Part 2: Working platforms and walkways

BS EN ISO 14122-3:2016 Safety of machinery - Permanent means of access to machinery - Part 3: Stairs, stepladders and guard-rails

BS EN ISO 14122-4:2016 Safety of machinery - Permanent means of access to machinery - Part 4: Fixed ladders

Approved Document K of the Building Regs applies to staircases in buildings and will provide guidance on angles and step sizes etc
