We have a debate going at at work regarding how many hours a driver of a van or 1.5 tonne Luton can drive for in any given day. Thoughts?

They can drive for 24 hours however they MAY legally drive for 10 hours under GB domestic rules (i.e. not on a tachograph).

Quite surprised to see it considered acceptable for 5.5 hours driving before a break is mandated.

I'm glad to see that others agree with me on the 10 hours. People have been arguing with me that because they don't drive for over 4 hours everyday (because they have weekends off) then the 10 hours doesn't apply!

Are you going to enter that argument ("they get the weekend off") into the most spurious argument of the year contest?

Hi Kate

I'm going to use all the time myself to be honest............You'll be fine to lift that 80kg box because you'll have the weekend off.......................Just sweep up that asbestos with a dust pan and brush and then take the weekend off..............etc. etc.

It will really simply our approach to managing risk :)

I think they are reading that part wrong. If you look at the link in #2 the 4 hours applies to the length of the working day only not the driving! It is badly written though.

ie max 10 hours driving per day, but you can also do other things that day to take you to 11 hours of working time. If, however on any working day you drive for less than 4 hours, you can work for longer than 11 hours every day that week, but you still can’t drive for more than 10 hours.
