Morning/Afternoon,

Is anyone aware of any best practice concerning pre job, on the job and post job screening, for a current employee, who would be required to view graphic images as part of their work?

One of the only examples I can think of would be police and emergency services, does anyone know they ensure the individual selected for the work are prepared and mentally capable to cope with the long lasting effects of viewing traumatic images.

Any thoughts, tips, documents, links, contacts would be appreciated.

Due to the nature of the beast during the Afghan operations the MOD came under scrutiny for not doing this. They didn't have pre job screening but had during and after. It went by the name of TRIM. I was never TRIM trained or went through the process but I'd imagine someone on here could give a better insight?

There was an article on TRIM in the November 2017 edition of IOSH Magazine which I found interesting.

Tread carefully with the screening - this can result in challenge regarding discrimination unfortunately. However if suitable reliance and support services are offered to staff this can only help . Working in and organisation where staff are exposed to graphic images / material this is our approach and it seems to work if staff know what to do and to be aware to look out for if getting overloaded. We had considered and investigated screening but didn’t go ahead with it in the end as with the post those applying should be aware that they would be exposed to such material - although this is heavily emphasised at application stage and interview. Pm if you want to discuss further.

Pre employment screening is employed in a few roles.One that comes to mind is Explosive Ordanance Disposal it is used because of the skills needed in that role and the mindset required while on task. In respect of most emengercy services its only after an incudent that such items are discussed. It requires watching of the workers by first line managers who are trained in spotting problems. It also requires a system within the organisation to allow this to be treated without cost to the worker

Not the case in the RAF, it's a trade posting, not a choice for some.
