The PC has decided it might be worth looking at hiring purpose built welfare units to accommodate some of the guys that will be working away from home on a site that is expected to last for 8 months.

As far as I'm concerned, (I might be wrong!), the fact that the contractors are working away from home would be sufficient to warrant having accommodation on site.

HSG168 says:

(3) It may be acceptable, in limited circumstances, for construction employees to sleep on some projects, eg in purpose-built accommodation (including huttype dormitories) placed on site with ............

Can anyone cast any light on what would be considered acceptable 'limited circumstances' please?

NB, I do appreciate the need for a Fire Risk Assessment, siting of the units, welfare facilities that need to be covered - but if there are any other considerations I would be happy for anyone's input.

Many thanks.

Also when there is a need for constant servaillance of something on site.

Normally, construction workers would not need on-site accommodation unless they are working in a remote location. It is more normal for the employer to pay them a staying out payment to cover room and meals.

There was the relativley recent sad case of a security guard killed by carbon monoxide fumes from the heating system in his cabin - eight months and we will be well and truly back in to winter.

Then there is the current heatwave - temporary accomodation can be very hot causing sleep depravation / dehydration.

Curious to know if the PC just seen a re-run of Auf Wiedersehen Pet?

Unless it is very remote site you have to remember that you are dealing with people - even the large hotel groups can be talked in to a bulk booking discount for the guaranteed income.

Sounds like one big hassle to be honest. not to mention the hazards it may introduce. Think alcohol consuption onsite, hygeine issues etc Is it it nessacary they sleep there?

if they need accomondation it should have been built into the scope of the bid

I think you could be buying your way into a world of trouble here.  As others have said there are the issues of hygiene, servicing of the units, alcohol consumption (you can have that in a hotel too but at least they aren't on site with access to plant and equipment), provision of food and removal of wastes.  The list could go on for a long time.  Get them in a Travelodge or similar - I bet it won't cost any more.

Many thanks for the replies, I am not aware of the prospective site address myself, so therefore unsure of how remote it is. I shall be feeding back your comments with regard 'limited circumstances'

Thank you again for your input.
