Does anyone have any experience of working with road planers?

We’ve been using a road planer and mechanical sweeper for a number of years without issue. Both have jet sprays to supress dust but we’ve had a recent complaint from a resident on a road where we’ve been using the planer about black dust entering his property, causing a mess and potentially affecting his health.

Has anyone had any similar issues? I'm not sure what else we could have done to minimise the dust generated.

Thanks in advance

Hi. Normal control is the fitted spraying equipment for suppression.

You might want to look into the specific circumstances around the complaint:

  1. Was the suppression system on when working in proximity to his property?
  2. Did they show you the black dust or allow you to look at / sample?

Its very easy for someone to complain - what you want to do is ensure your controls were in place and then assure the resident of this and that it should not have created the dust or impacted their health.

Might it might be worth considering collecting the dust using some suitable system (an industrial hygienist can advise on what is best to use). This will tell what sort of dust they are complaining about (it could have nothing to do with you) and how much is being created over what timeframe. It might actually be minimal or very coarse dust which settles quickly and does not pose any respiratory risks.

One of our local roads was recently worked upon and whilst the cutting end of the machine apperaed to have a suppression spray in operation the conveyor and open top waggons collecting the plannings did not - result a lot of very dusty cars, gardens, etc...

Yes, we're confident that the suppression system was working, but because of the really dry weather the planing process will disperse more dust than normal.

As you say normal control is using the jet spray equipment and this system of control is used nationally on a daily basis in hundreds of towns and cities.

Residents are pre warned a number of weeks in advance of the works so common sense would say keep your windows and doors closed during the period of planing.

Hiya

I am assuming its a read sweeper

With road sweepers you need to make sure the drivers have cleaned their filters - often they will sweep up - Great!  they will dampen down the road  - great!

then blow all the dust out of the top of the filter - I would ask to see the maintenance records and ensure they do a daily check before they start working

hopefully, that might help?
