Hello,

A lift took place recently where a  large hopper was lifted using a combination of lifting beams, chain slings and wire rope slings.  The rope slings were slung around each corner of the hopper superstructure frame. 2 lifts occured with the hopper being loaded and then offoaded from a vessel.

However, after each single lift, the majority of the slings had to be replaced as they had become worn and flattened.

In my mind they have used the wrong approach as the slings should not be gettting damaged in this way. The team have suggested that some damaged gear is to be expected but I am sure this is correct.  Any thoughts?

Not being able to see the lift does leave a lot to the imagination but I cannot believe that there is not a safer method of doing this.

Welding lifting pads to the Hopper or a lifting frame to allow this process.

But if this follows ALARP then they must feel it is acceptable loss.

As it would be reportable under RIDDOR what would be the repercussions to the company?
