H&S Professionals.. can you share your opinion? We have production area with determined high level of noise abve 85dB. Our production staff wears ear defenders all time however we have warehouse staff who have to go thru factory area to the canteen or toilet. They are i that area literally 5-10 min a day if that.. factory area is marked with mandatory sign of wearing ear defenders. Question.. do warehouse staff must wear ear protection as the daily or weekly exposure is not even 80dB..on the other hand reg says whoever enters area with mandatory sign must wear ear protection. Cannot move the signage as for factory staff the level of noise is still high even across the walkways.. Also how would ISO auditors approach it if saw warshouse staff entering the area without ear protection...

Can the access to canteen and toilets be changed so that they don't have to go through the noise area?

If the signs are up protection needs to be worn, no matter how short the transit exposure. Auditors would comment on observations of non-compliance.

If practical apply ERICPD - eliminate the hazard or risk.

I agree with SNS

Change the access points would be this simplest and best way.

Reasons for it

How do you control access? what happens if someone goes to the toilet a lot, how do you stop people from stopping and chatting.

If that isn’t possible I would make sure your noise risk assessment is as good as possible.

Im sure you have already tried stopping the source and other methods.

Find the quietest route through the factory and mark it as a walk way.

Change signs to Mandatory ear protection for production staff only.

Place sign up: None production staff high noise levels in this area access to canteen and toilets by walkway only and no stopping.

Regular education and training but it’s a thin line. you will need a good risk assessment and evidence to back it up.
