Hi All,

After a bit of guidance regarding new build homes.

The footrpath leading to the front door of a private domestic residence has a step approxiamtely 5" in height, midway along its length. Approaching the house this step is clear to see, due to the colour of the brick work supporting the steps slab. The pathway when it reaches the house it is almost level with the houses internal floor.

However, when leaving the house the step becomes difficult to see due to the colour of the footpaths slabs and pretty much everyone who negotiates the footpath on the way out trips.  The quick fix would be to paint the edge of the step white. The long term fix would be to lower the step and move the step along the path to the houses front door, the foot path will be level its entire length.

However, the house builder has said this cannot be done due to legilsation regarding wheel chair access. This seems a bit odd to me as there's a step to negotiate anyway, and the location of which is hazradous, but this same step cannot moved along to the front door where it will be clearly seen. (NB wheel chair acces is not required for the home owner)

Is their any legislation supporting the house builders claim?

Thanks in advance

Look at Building Code M- section dealing with access. HMG have secured it so I can’t copy any sections out of it (if they think that will make we want to buy it, they are very much mistaken!)

It talks about using a gentle slope of possible but allows for steps if necessary.

How this relates to what your builder was saying I leave for you to decide.
