Hello there,
One of my clients is a machine manufacturer in Derby, which is a light engineering company.
Their noise risk assessment needs reviewing. While working for them I am acting as their
HSE Manager on an interim basis.
Their noise meter needs replacing (been pinched) and I am unsure whether to get a Class 1
or Class 2 meter. We obviously have to measure noise levels in the building and when noisy
equipment is used but also we measure the noise generated by the equipment from a
customer exposure view point when they are using our machines in the field.
I108 states "Your sound level meter should meet at least Class 2 of BS EN 61672-1:200318
(the current instrumentation standard for sound level meters), or at least Type 2 of BS EN
60804:200119 (the former standard)."
The only complication is the equipment we make is CE marked so we are also measuring
noise to add to the Instructions Manual.
So my immediate thought was Class 1 but can't find any guidance out there one way or the
other.
Best regards, Steve

The characteristics of sound level meters are described in BS EN 61672-1 (BSI, 2013c) and two classes are defined, Class 1 being the most accurate, and Class 2 being used for more general purpose measurements. A Class 1 instrument is recommended if available. I hope that helps?
