When I was Station Officer in fire service I could certify passport photo's amd it would be accepted by the powers that be.  I was recently asked to certify a friend's photo ID, not passport or driving license, and did so, but it was not accepted as I am now a 'retired' fire officer.

Does anyone know if as a CMIOSH would my certifying a new passport photo be accepted.

An internet search found

https://www.gov.uk/countersigning-passport-applications/accepted-occupations-for-countersignatories

Which says:

Accepted occupations for countersignatories

Your countersignatory must either:

  • work in (or be retired from) a recognised profession
  • be ‘a person of good standing in their community’

and includes

  • fire service official
  • member, associate or fellow of a professional body

I know I could have done that search but wanted to know if people actually do it and accepted so thanks to both of you.

I used to when I was an established civil servant. Now, I am not sure if  I count as a professional since I never wear a suit to work!

I have done it recently, but as a director of a VAT registered company. There are all sorts of qualifiers now.

No longer does it have to be your Dr who you saw once a year for 5 mins, who would then charge you £20 to countersign your photo

Ah!  That is the sign of a true professional: someone who sees you for 5 minutes and charges £20 for the privilege!

People who aren’t accepted

Your countersignatory can’t:

  • work for HM Passport Office
  • be a doctor, unless they state that they know you well (eg good friend) and that they recognise you easily from your photo

So at last, a bit of common snese has prevailed. Just because they are a professional doesn't mean that they can sign pics off..

You can go to a high street photo shop and they will take pics, give you paper and e copies and upload them and verify them for official purposes such as passport, it costs about a tenner.
