Hi All, Is anyone aware of any guidance which specifies the best times to test fire call points. Some of our buildings are being tested when unoccupied and I think its better to be completed when staff would actually hear the sounders however I know this will be resisted so I'm just trying to get any ducks in a row before raising it. Thanks in advance.

Call points should be tested when it suits you. If the tester who tests the call point can't hear the alarm sounders then there is something wrong with your system. The test should only last a few seconds anyway to prove that the system works and the sounders are operational.

British Standards require that each individual call-point is tested once per quarter (4 times a year). The purpose of the test is to establish that the alarm can be heard throughout the building, any automatic systems connected to the alarm operate correctly and that it show that the locations shows up correctly on the alarm panel.

I tested mine in a joinery workshop at 11 am every Thursday. Notices everywhere and they were well used to it.
I receievd one heck of a rollocking one day from the MD because he was having a very important meeting when the Klaxon sounded.

Once when I worked for the NHS, the Trust fire safety adviser (not me!!) decided to randomly test the fire alarm at a health centre. He didn't bother to tell the medics what he was doing. It was rather embarrassing for a female patient, at the time she was having a contraceptive coil fitted .....

What is page number in B.S.5839 that states each individual call point is tested every quarter?
