Hi All,
I am sure some of you will have read the latest IOSH edition in which the use of VR has been discussed.
What are your thoughts, would you use it in your organization? do you? would you use it over traditional classroom type training?

Haven't seen the article but VR was in use in the US Military for aircraft inspectors more than 15 years ago, it enabled guidance on likely fatigue failure points. Trialled and the inspectors then went to check 'live' aircraft it increased the discovery rate of faults. In my current industry - primary and secondary schools it appears to be being used as a teaching aid. In outside industry I would reckon that everything has a place to vary the teaching and learning to make it more inclusive.

I've been in organisations that are using both virtual and augmented reality as a supplement to on the job training but not in direct replacement. I've seen some excellent AR, particularly when training students in welding. Benefits are that the student is better prepared in terms of holding and using the weld torch, can have performed many weld positions and each student's performance can be shared with the peer group and real time instruction can be given. All without the incurred costs of welding consumables and metals.
No doubt the technology will improve at a rapid pace, but from the examples of seen, forward-thinking establishments are using them as an aid to training.

Although we here in the UK is not yet using it, we are in discussions with our Group HQ about adapting the VR systems used for sales and techinical awareness, to introduce a VR system as an aid to hazard-spotting training during inductions
