I am currently studying for a Masters in h&s and need your help! Does your company use vibratory tools and are the employees exposed to HAVS? If so how do you monitor their exposure and ensure you are compliant? Do you use wrist worn technology, if so how reliable is this and which one do you use? What action have you taken as a result of the findings from the monitoring? Thank you for your assistance.

An assessment is made initially by producing a questionnaire to the employee likely to be exposed, asking for timings of use of powered tooling. This needs to be identified and a duration. If someone submits his / her questionnaire and it states they were using the tool for 8 hours, this is not accepted, so we do a time monitoring test - sample of observation with a watch of trigger times (there is no legal need to measure actual exposure at this stage). Information of tooling/length of time exposed is then transferred to HSE's Vibration Calculator and then assess EAV & ELV issues appropriately. This is then supported by periodic HAVs Occupational Health Screening. Trust this helps? Waz
