The Viking Sky cruise ship limped into Molde in Norway after coming within 100m of rocks in a cyclone whole carrying about 1000 passengers, largely elderly according to reports. Earlier the engines in the vessel, commissioned in 2017, had failed. Pictures showed unsecured furniture sliding around inside. Ceiling material reportedly fell on some passengers. There was water intrusion through damaged doors.
The shipping line’s owner was quoted as saying on Norwegian TV2: 'They've had a bit of a shocking experience.’ [talking of the passengers, half of whom were winched off by helicopter in poor weather conditions]
The Norwegian Accident Investigation organisation is to enquire. Presumably weather forecasting off Norway is pretty good. There are quite a number of safe anchorages as well as ports. The ship is almost brand new. So the report should be interesting.
