Hi all, just wanted some clarification on Manual Handling Risk Assessments, if a task encompasses both Carrying and Lifting would two seperate RA's be needed on the MACC assessments.

Also, does a comprehensive risk assessment factor both in?

Have a read through the latest HSE Guidance. It describes a straightforward proportionate approach and explains when  to apply additional tools - and which tools best suit the task.

I suggest that only on rare occassions is there any need to discuss MHO risk beyond what's written in the overarching task-based assessment (MHSWR). Sometimes the additional tools, when correctly applied, simply confirm that initial approach as being enough.

MAC charts are not always a full MH risk assessment they are really only any good as a screening tool..pointing you in the direction of doing a more detailed assessment...the combination of lifting twisting, turning and pushing and pulling would in my view constitite the need for a separate assessment...filter first using the MAC&C and then do the assessment if it show areas of high risk...what Ron is trying to say if the risk is low you can cover it in your general risk assessment without the need for a separate assessment...
