Hi all

Hoping to pick your brains on generators.

Recently, we have acquired several buildings where generators provide a secondary source of power to fire fighting lifts, looking through BS 9999 it sets out a monthly simulated power failure once per month. Having relayed this information to the FM Team, they have come back stating that it's not possible to simulate power loss without shutting down the lifts... which of course would upset customers.

My understanding is that it is possible, does anyone else have experience of simulating power failure for generators acting as secondary supplies? How did you comply with this standard?

thanks

Adrina

Maybe do it out of hours (just before or just after the business closes?)

it is really just about running the lifts for an hour per month on the standby generators - it does say simulating power fail..but might be easier to badge it this way to appease the FM team...failure rate of standby egenrators is in the region of 5.0E-4 (Fail to start - all modes)

Thanks guys.

I spoke to a friendly electrical company yesterday and apparently, you can simulate the load without risking the lifts going out of action or actually running the lifts on the generator. What is interesting is that he said that most companies ignore the monthly testing set out in BS999 and instead do an annual test as monthly simulated testing is very expensive.

Thanks again.
