Hi All,

last year we held a Safety Week whereby there were daily activites with different H&S focuses, we had VR training on one day, live fire training on another, and a first aid scenario role play activity. Most of the activites involved external suppliers, who specialised in the given field. The week was really well recieved with excitement the next years event.

This year we are continuing to promote the week, which will take place in April, and I would like to know if anyone has held a similar event and what activities did you put in place for the team? I don't really want to hold the same activities as last year, as to me it's important to ensure that the theme changes to maintain wider engagement.

The organisation I work for specialises in Aerospace Manufacturing and Logistics, we have a variety of processes in our workshop such as timber machining, a spray booth, welding area and a variety of MHE, but I would also like to include office hazards within the week.

Hi JK

If we include all the fatal accidents that are excluded from the scope of RIDDOR, we are probably looking at a number in excess of 1000 a year in the UK.

In the same period HSE estimates that about 13,000 will have died prematurely as a result of work-related occupational health risks and the vast majority of those down to respiratory risks.

Those respiratory risks will extend to issues that your workforce contend with OUTSIDE work, so you could tap into issues which those e.g. in the office might relate to.

Mixing of incompatible cleaning chemicals has been back in the news as happens from time to time. May be you could set up a strictly controlled experiment where people mix bleach and other nasties and see how much chlorine and toxic chlorine derivatives are released? [NOT to be repeated at home!!!!]

Then you could add in some stuff about wood dust, solvents at the spray booth and welding fume - some of which may relate to the DIYers who work at your organisation.

If that's not enough you could add in noise and vibration. At least half of your workforce will have power tools at home.

Hi

I have been here many times in the past. The problem with having a fixed annual H&S event  is that eventually it becomes a chore which you end up doing because you promised to do something at the H&S committee to promote H&S.  The first event is usually easy as in most organisations there is  an obvious concern ( use of machinery, COSHH or WAH for example) and you build your event around that. The event might be well attended and raise the H&S profile in the organisation.  The “difficult second album” moment occurs when you realise that will have to do something next year and as you don’t want to be accused of repeating yourself you try to find something new and will want  to include  “office folk” to avoid them being  left out.  Perhaps you could do something about stress but that might impinge on your HR colleagues turf.  Slips trips and falls, which are the biggest cause of  time lost type accidents, is a possibility but its almost too general and   of course rarely causes serious injury except when it does cause serious injury: the nastiest accident I ever saw was trip.

I personally think lots of little initiatives during the year have a) more impact and b) cost less time and effort and if they don’t work out you don’t really lose that much.

That just my belief based on where I have worked.

Not sure if this is helpful or not.

But shouldn’t your “week” be based around your areas of concern, either the type of accidents you get or your areas of most concern.

Perhaps your main areas of concern are around people who don’t weld entering the areas where welding takes place and not appreciating dangers (arc eye, hot hot hot etc). So could you make everyone an honorary H&S person for the day and get the office people to discuss and come up with a list of risks to the welder and anyone in their area. The welders’ group could do the woodworkers, and the woodworkers look at office staff and any other areas of the premises (yard or paring area etc etc).

Make it some sort of game or competition, between groups.

I do get some concern over these things, especially if it becomes a chore. I remember not so many years ago, joe public making comments around “there is too much H&S”. Are you really sure you want a whole week of this?

Chris
