Hi

Our transport manager has seen a few transport blogs on line stating that all HGVs must have fire extinguishers within their cabs and failure to do so can result in fines and points etc.

Our HGV s are not ADR and carry no hazardous items. My understanding has always been that there is only a requirement to have fire extingushers if a risk assessmnet calls for them.

I can see no legislation or ACOPs etc supporting the mandatory requirement for fire extinguishers in non ADR HGVs.

Does anyone have any info on this

These "blogs" he has seen - do they come with the appropriate regulatory reference?

If fines can be issued which traffic law are they served under?

Methinks the chattering masses strike again.

Now if he wants them then its his transport budget that can purchase and maintain the extinguishers.

Do the blogs relate strictly to UK requirements or perhaps to overseas ones?  Given that HGVs have been known to cross borders, there may be other nations' requirements to consider.

Unless it’s under other legislation, the typical HGV does not require extinguisher. Many blogs confuse legislation, company requirements and local requirements - some clients may require them for going on sites or to look after their particular loads. Let’s see if your TM comes up with some supporting alternatives legislation
